‘ANXIETY’ AN EXHIBITION BY BRECHT VANDENBROUCKE

On the 23rd of September Nobrow gallery will be welcoming the eminently talented Belgian surrealist illustrator/artist Brecht Vandenbroucke to our gallery space at Nobrow Shop and Gallery, where we will be showing a collection of just under twenty works by the prolific painter. Private view starts at 6.30 pm on Thurs 23rd Sept. Click here to RSVP and see event details.

Brecht Vandenbroucke, one of the most recent additions to the roster of Nobrow artists, works in the true tradition of his Flemish predecessors, vast and complex paintings detailing everything from the apocalypse to the mundanities of everyday life. His stunning use of colour and adeptness with printmaking made him a prime target for Nobrow activities from the first time we saw his work on Flickr, via a small 20px squared portrait on a comment box of someone else’s Flickr photostream. Yes, it was a strange way to come across such great work, but that’s why its so great… read more here.

Exhibition Doom 3.0

Last week saw the opening of our second exhibition at Nobrow Gallery, ‘Doom 3.0′. This time it was a double hit of illustrative euphoria as artists Jon Boam and Matthew the Horse took the mantle. After a busy week of preparation the gallery was finally transformed into a doodler’s paradise, with Jon and Matt’s kindred yet distinct styles gracing every surface of the premises, whether framed, clipped or painted directly onto the walls. Some of the characters even came to life, thanks to the ever impressive felt-craft of one Felt Mistress.

Screen-printed trading cards were produced specially for the show in a range of colours, and sealed inside specially screen-printed packaging. Somewhere lurking inside some of the packs bronze, silver or gold cards, for the luckiest of customers.

The crowds over spilled onto the street at the private view, and stayed long after the alcohol ran dry. It was a great turnout.

Our usual selection of books, zines and prints are coexisting nicely with the new arrivals housed on some brand spanking new shop fittings and a slew of new products are on the way soon to fill their maiden shelves. Come and have a look for yourselves and don’t forget to pick up one of the unique packs of mini prints by the two artists for the amazingly low price of just 20 pounds!

Brecht is also the next artist to appear in the Nobrow gallery, with his exhibition premiering on the 23rd of September 2010, more details to follow on this soon.

New Prints!!!!

After a period of relative quiet here on the blog, here’s our latest. We have just released two brand spanking new prints by the famed Mr Teagle. Busy Fighter and Annubis vs The Rain originally appeared  as Jack’s business card designs just after leaving college, but they were such great images we had to turn them into prints. In the nick of time they were released before the launch of the D&D show at our Gallery/Shop on Great Eastern Street and we have only just had the time to photograph them for the website. Check them out here.

Makkinoso Eyebird for Nobrow

We are very pleased that we have finally found a way to bring the good ol’ Eyebird into physical form in this stunningly hand crafted set of limited edition sculptures by Italian artist Makkinoso. Created in an edition of just 10 hand painted resin cast figurines this is a collectors item for any die hard Nobrow fans. Each bird comes packed in traditional Kaiju toy fashion, in a polythene bag with a header card, the classiest way of presenting such a fine object, hehe.

Nick White Talk

Hello all, we are starting a series of Process Talks soon at our HQ in 62 Great Eastern street. The first talk will be given by Heart agency artist Nick White, who will also be signing his book People I’ve Never Met… at the event.

The aim of the series of talks is for artists to speak through their creative process, from sketchbook to final artwork, to getting the work out into the big bad world for the benefit of fledgling illustrators, students and aficionados. Nick has years of experience working as an illustrator for a range of clients including TimeOut London, Plan B, World of Interiors, Cent. magazine and the LA Times, and is also the author and artist behind Nobrow’s ‘People I’ve Never Met and Conversations I’ve Never Had’. The talk will start at 6.30 pm on Thursday 24th of June, don’t miss your opportunity to hear what I’m sure will be a great talk and feel free to bring friends, we’ll fit as many people as we can. Nobrow and mistakes!!

Hi all, we are sorry to say that in spite of everyone’s pleasure at the sight of Nobrow 3, for the beautiful thing it is, it is dotted with errors. We were responsible for a number of mistakes within that are really quite embarrassing.

The first mistake was that Luke Best’s image in the credits section actually belonged to Rob Hunter, fatal error. We printed at our own cost 3,000 erratum slips with the correct image credit, which we then inserted by hand into the 3,000 copies of the magazine. Luke, we are very sorry for this very, very silly mistake.

The second we noticed was pointed out by Joao Fazenda, in the rush to meet the deadline of the Pick Me Up fair, we butchered his separations and they came out completely off-register. This is really not what has come to be expected of us at Nobrow, we pride ourselves on being expert printmakers, so a shame it was that we did not do his beautiful submission justice. We would like to thank Joao for his time and effort and will be sending him a big goodies package in the post to ask his forgiveness. This is Joao’s work, he is a very talented illustrator and we hope that posting the correct artwork, above, will add a little salve to the wounds…

The third and easiest to avoid mistake was the spelling of Emmanuel Romeuf’s name, which is spelt correctly here. A French speaker myself, I should have spotted this quite obvious error, one which furthermore was avoided in the web address we provided directly below it. This is his website, Emmanuel, Je vous demande pardon pour l’erreur débile!

The fact of the matter is that we were massively over-extended and we are a very small studio, this is not an excuse, but we were sending four projects to print simultaneously and were also building a gallery in our workspace. The month of March 2010 was one we will never chose to repeat, we took too much on and crumbled slightly under the pressure. In many respects I am surprised we didn’t do worse out of it… the other three books of which one was a translation from French which I personally oversaw, were 100% error and typo free…

To those we misrepresented we ask for your forgiveness and promise it will never happen again.

Best, Alex

Pick Me Up photos

It’s been a couple of weeks since we packed up shop at Pick Me Up (Somerset House), but just before we did we finally had the chance to snap some photos of the decorated space free of the 14000 strong crowd that had visited the event over the 10 period. Here are the photos and if you want to read more about Pick Me Up and our presence there, follow this link. In what many were heralding as the first contemporary graphic art fair of its kind in the UK, people could visit working studios and print rooms and in some cases even take part. There was a great line up of contemporary illustrators and graphic artists, including Rob Ryan and Luke Best, and a strong presence of successful young collectives Peepshow, Le Gun and Evening Tweed as well as hip Shoreditch gallery Concrete Hermit, amongst others. The fair gave the general pubic the opportunity to buy limited edition, affordable graphic art, illustration and design and the overall response was very positive.

Post on Creative Review about Nobrow at Pick Me Up

We were very fortunate that Creative Review were so kind as to take some photos of our exhibition space, we were so busy tending to the stall itself we hadn’t gotten round to it yet. But anyway here they are. The idea was to transport our studio to pick me up and at the same time be in keeping with the Topsy Turvy theme. If you click through you will see the interview and in spite of looking like a bit of a muppet, I still managed to flick through a number of our newest publications with out too much gaucheness. So if you want to check out some pics and see our latest, click here or on the above image.
